What is the concept of education ?

The concept of education is one of the most important sciences that man has achieved and developed over time, and it has different types and methods. In conclusion, it depends on teaching and learning new skills that were unknown before and develops man’s mental ability.

Scholars differed in defining education, but they agreed on defining it as a process of training and teaching certain foundations and principles and transmitting them across generations.

Definition of education

There are two different definitions of education and they are as follows:

Definition of education linguistically: Education is defined linguistically as refinement, and it is from the verb rābā meaning to exalt, increase, and grow, so it is said rābwah, meaning a high and elevated place, as stated in the Lisan al-Arab dictionary.

Definition of education idiomatically: It means building and developing physical and human characteristics through continuous training to form a more distinguished and sophisticated personality.

Many scholars have shed light on the concept of education, and among the most prominent definitions are the following:

1.    Plato's definition of education

Plato saw that education is about training and taming a person's first instinct by giving him new habits.

2.    Sati's exclusive definition of education

Sati’ Al-Husri defined education as raising an individual who is strong in body, of good character, of sound mind, who loves his country, is proud of his nationalism, is aware of his duties, and is equipped with the information necessary for him in his life.

3.    Herbert Spencer's definition of education

As for Herbert, he saw that education means preparing the individual to live a full life.

4.    Ronnie Aubert's definition of education

Education, he says, is the sum of the influences and actions that one human being exercises voluntarily on another, often young, and aims to form various aptitudes that lead him to maturity and perfection.

5.    Imam Al-Ghazali’s definition of education

Education is the difference and separation between humans and animals. It is the basis, starting point, and necessity for the well-being of society.

The value of education

The value of education is evident in several aspects, the most important of which are:

  •  Human advancement and development.
  •  Enhancing positive values ​​in humans and getting rid of negative values.
  • Developing society culturally, economically and politically.
  • Empowering society in facing external and internal challenges.
  • Achieving societal cohesion between groups and individuals in one society by establishing good morals.
  • Modifying the societal behavioral pattern to a better one.
  • Education is an important element in the process of interaction between the individual and his environment in which he lives and how to preserve it.
  • Building a modern society by enabling it to keep pace with scientific and technological progress.

In the past, parents relied on their simple knowledge to raise their children, and education did not face complex difficulties.

In the past, children used to practice simple hobbies and games such as swimming and football, so there was no complex, mixed world as it is today.

  • It is concerned with guiding individuals to distinguish between right and wrong things.
  • It is considered the first pillar of human life.
  • It is associated with educational institutions and schools in directing student behavior.
  • It is part of human culture because of its connection to human concepts.

  Education and ethics

Some have noticed that there are habits learned by young people that are rooted in education, even though they are negative and spread an ideology that does not make education move them toward virtuous morals. The above leads to disastrous results on personal aspects, and therefore fathers and mothers need cooperation.

More efforts must also be made in raising children in order to preserve them and build moral values ​​and instill them in them from a young age.

Here it is worth mentioning what Imam Ali, may God bless him, said in an important educational hadith where he said: (Do not force your children to follow your manners, for they were created for a time other than yours.)

Therefore, parents must develop their educational skills according to the development of the situation and the advancement of technology, taking into account the aspect of flexibility in dealing with children.

Education is an important necessity of life, as it contributes to supporting human behavior, using a group of the following educational methods:

Adapting to the surrounding environment: is making the child discover the environment surrounding him, while ensuring that means are provided to protect him from exposure to harm.

We conclude from the above that education is not an easy process and is necessary for a person in his private and public life, and it is also an urgent need for the advancement of societies.

Society today is faced with complex responsibilities that must be overcome, especially after young people have been greatly informed and influenced by the West through negative phenomena.
